According to a statement from Oburu Oginga’s secretariat, the veteran politician was alive and preparing his official speech for the handover ceremony of the late Raila Odinga’s mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi when the reports started spreading online.

The secretariat dismissed the claims as false, saying Oburu was “well, safe, and in good spirits.”

The statement came after social media reports sparked concern among members of the public and supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

His office said Oburu had been preparing for the upcoming mausoleum handover ceremony, which is expected to be attended by President William Ruto and forms part of events marking one year since the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Oburu was preparing his speech

According to his secretariat, Oburu was not only alive but was actively preparing for an important national event when the death claims began circulating.

The ODM leader was reportedly working on his speech ahead of the handover of Raila Odinga’s mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Siaya.

The development provides a stark contrast to the claims circulating online that the veteran politician had died.

His office urged Kenyans to disregard the reports and rely on official communication regarding his health and activities.

Doctors had ordered him to rest

Oburu’s office also acknowledged that he has been under medical instructions to rest and reduce heavy physical engagements.

Despite those restrictions, the secretariat said he remained fully updated on developments and continued to be engaged in important party and national matters.

The statement described him as mentally alert and said he was continuing his recovery while following the advice of his doctors.

The clarification followed renewed speculation about his health after his recent medical attention.

ODM communications director Philip Etale had earlier said Oburu had visited Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up and dismissed claims that he had been rushed to the facility.

Governor Wanga confirms Oburu is alive

Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga also moved to reassure the public.

Wanga said she had visited Oburu and found him in good spirits as he continued recovering.

“My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits,” Wanga said.

Her remarks further contradicted the social media reports announcing Oburu’s alleged death.

Secretariat warns against false reports

Oburu’s office criticised the circulation of what it described as malicious and unfounded information, warning that social media should not be used to spread unverified claims about people’s health.

The secretariat said it was in communication with ODM leadership over the matter and indicated that possible legal action was being considered.

It also appealed to the public and media organisations to verify information through official channels before publishing or sharing sensitive claims.

For now, the official account is clear: Oburu Oginga is alive, recovering, and was preparing a speech for the Raila Odinga mausoleum handover ceremony when the death rumours circulated.
