Kenya’s political landscape could witness an unexpected turn ahead of the 2027 General Election after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hinted at an unconventional opposition leadership arrangement that could bring together younger political voices and experienced leaders.

In remarks that have attracted attention, Gachagua suggested that the opposition could settle on a presidential ticket that differs from what many Kenyans might expect. His message was clear: the final decision should depend on political calculations rather than individual ambitions, with several possible combinations still on the table.

Gachagua Opens the Door to Sifuna–Kalonzo Ticket
Speaking to Kenyans in Spokane, Washington, on September 6, 2026, Gachagua said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna could either seek the presidency or serve as a running mate to another opposition leader.

He also declared that he would be willing to deputise Sifuna if the political numbers showed that the senator was best positioned to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election.
“Even Sifuna can deputise me. Sifuna can also deputise Kalonzo Musyoka. Kalonzo can also deputise Sifuna,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President added that opposition leaders would eventually agree on a lineup that combines youthful energy with political experience.
“We will come up with a line-up and you will love it. We will blend youthful energy with experience,” he stated.
Why Sifuna and Kalonzo Are Part of the Conversation
Sifuna, the Nairobi senator and a prominent figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement, has increasingly featured in discussions about the opposition’s direction ahead of the next election.
Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper leader and former Vice-President, is another established opposition figure whose name remains part of conversations about a possible joint presidential ticket.
Gachagua’s remarks suggest that neither seniority nor previous political positions should automatically determine who becomes the presidential candidate or running mate.
Instead, he argued that the opposition should assess its options and support the person best placed to lead its campaign.
Gachagua Says Opposition Must Agree on One Lineup
Gachagua’s comments come amid broader discussions about uniting opposition leaders ahead of the August 2027 General Election.
The challenge will be finding an arrangement that accommodates different political ambitions while building agreement on a common presidential candidate.
Although Gachagua has publicly expressed willingness to consider serving as Sifuna’s deputy, he has also left open the possibility of alternative combinations involving Kalonzo.
No official Sifuna–Kalonzo presidential ticket has been announced, and Gachagua’s remarks should be understood as an expression of openness to negotiations rather than confirmation of a concluded deal.
