Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he is willing to deputise Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 presidential election, provided opposition leaders determine that Sifuna is the strongest candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

Speaking to Kenyans, Gachagua said the opposition should prioritise electoral arithmetic over individual ambitions when selecting its presidential candidate.
“If we do our arithmetic and find that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will send President William Ruto home early, so be it,” Gachagua said.
“And there is no problem, by the way, even I, Riggy G, can deputise Sifuna. There is nothing wrong with that.”
Gachagua maintained that the opposition should unite behind a single presidential candidate capable of mounting a nationwide challenge against Ruto in the August 2027 General Election.
He also indicated that the arrangement could work in reverse, with Sifuna deputising him or Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, depending on the outcome of consultations among opposition leaders.
“We will come up with a line-up and you will love it. We will blend youthful energy with experience,” he said.
The former Deputy President further defended Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, dismissing arguments that the Nairobi senator was too young to seek the country’s highest office.
Gachagua’s remarks come amid ongoing opposition negotiations over a joint presidential ticket, with leaders exploring possible alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
On October 20, 2026, Gachagua hosted Sifuna and members of the Linda Mwananchi faction at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. The meeting signalled further efforts towards political cooperation, although the opposition has yet to announce a final presidential ticket.
For now, Gachagua’s position is clear: he is willing to take the deputy presidential position if opposition consultations and electoral calculations favour Sifuna as the coalition’s presidential candidate.
