Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has made an announcement saying she would not seek re-election on a UDA ticket. She said her decision followed consultations and what she described as a period of soul-searching.

The legislator said she could no longer remain in a political alignment with leaders whom she accused of failing to respect others.

“I am not going to serve in a political alignment of people who cannot respect others,” she said, adding that her conscience did not allow her to continue working with such leaders.

Wamuchomba accuses government of selective justice

One of the issues at the centre of Wamuchomba’s criticism is what she described as selective justice within the Kenya Kwanza administration.

She questioned why Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia had faced legal action over remarks attributed to him while Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale had not faced similar action over comments Wamuchomba said were disrespectful to the Kikuyu community.

“Nothing has been done to Aden Duale after he disrespected the community. It is selective justice and I don’t agree with it,” she said. The Standard

Wamuchomba further claimed that she had raised the matter with government officials but was told that no action would be taken against Duale. These claims were presented by Wamuchomba and were not independently established in the Standard report.

Criticism over treatment of young people

The Githunguri MP also criticised the government’s handling of issues affecting young Kenyans.

She said the administration had failed to listen to young people despite the widespread Gen Z demonstrations of 2024, which were largely driven by opposition to taxation, governance concerns and other grievances.

“The government does not listen. The government has not taken youths seriously even after the 2024 Gen Z demonstrations,” she said.

Her criticism follows earlier public disagreements with the administration. In May 2025, Wamuchomba also criticised President Ruto’s apology to Gen Z protesters, arguing that accountability was necessary alongside an apology.

A political reversal

Wamuchomba’s latest announcement marks a notable change from her position earlier this year.

In January 2026, she attended a UDA National Governing Council meeting at State House and publicly expressed support for President Ruto’s re-election bid.

Her subsequent decision to leave UDA therefore represents a significant shift in her political positioning.

The Standard has reported that Mt Kenya politics has experienced growing political realignments as parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Issues cited in the region’s changing political environment include the high cost of living, unfulfilled campaign promises and the political fallout surrounding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s removal from office.

Wamuchomba yet to reveal her next party

Despite announcing her departure from UDA, Wamuchomba has not disclosed which political party she intends to join.

Instead, she said she would seek another political vehicle and would listen to the views of Kenyans as she makes her next political move.

Her departure comes as several politicians reassess their party affiliations ahead of the 2027 General Election, with new alliances and political formations emerging across the country.

For President William Ruto and UDA, Wamuchomba’s announcement adds another layer to the ongoing political realignment in Mt Kenya, a region that played a significant role in the 2022 election.

The political consequences of her decision will depend on the alliances and political formations that emerge before the 2027 polls. For now, Wamuchomba has made clear that she will not defend her Githunguri seat under the UDA banner.
