Nyandarua Senator John Methu has publicly dismissed claims linking retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to the financing of opposition activities, insisting that neither he nor his party leader has received money from the former Head of State.

Speaking during a radio interview on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Methu challenged those claiming that Uhuru was financially supporting opposition leaders to provide evidence to back their allegations.

The senator’s remarks come amid growing political exchanges involving President William Ruto, Uhuru and opposition leaders as political alignments begin taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Methu Makes Strong Statement About Uhuru

During the interview, Methu made it clear that he had never personally received money from the former President, firmly rejecting suggestions that Uhuru was financing his political activities.

“I swear before God, I have never seen a shilling from Uhuru Kenyatta,” Methu said.

He further insisted that his party leader had also never received money from the retired President, challenging those spreading the allegations to produce evidence supporting their claims.

The statement places Methu at the centre of an ongoing political debate over the alleged financial influence of former leaders in opposition politics.

While allegations have circulated that Uhuru is supporting opposition mobilisation, Methu maintained that his political activities should not be attributed to financial assistance from the former Head of State.

Why Methu Is Questioning William Ruto’s Narrative

The senator also questioned why Uhuru continued to be portrayed as the force behind opposition activities, arguing that the former President was being used as a convenient figure to blame for the government’s political challenges.

Methu specifically questioned the use of the nickname “Sponyo”, which has featured in political exchanges involving Ruto and his allies.

According to the senator, the former President was being presented as a political sponsor despite his insistence that neither he nor his party leader had received money from him.

“Because William Ruto must get a bogeyman,” Methu said, explaining why he believed Uhuru was being associated with the opposition’s activities.

His remarks add another dimension to the political disagreements between leaders allied to the government and those who have moved into opposition.

However, Methu’s statements represent his account of the matter, and they do not independently establish whether any financial support has been provided to other political figures or organisations.

Methu Defends Uhuru’s Retirement

Beyond denying claims of financial assistance, Methu also defended Uhuru’s position as a retired President, arguing that the former Head of State should be allowed to enjoy his retirement.

The senator recalled previously urging Uhuru to step back from the political accusations surrounding him, maintaining that the former President should not automatically be blamed for the activities of opposition leaders.

“Uhuru Kenyatta is a retired president. Allow him to retire,” Methu recalled saying.

The remarks come as Uhuru continues to attract attention over his public statements and interactions with opposition figures.

Although critics have associated him with opposition mobilisation, Uhuru has previously dismissed the labels directed at him, insisting that he is satisfied with his record and is not seeking another political position.

During a funeral in Kirinyaga County on October 3, 2026, the former President said he was not looking for anything from politics and urged Kenyans to focus on the country’s future.

Political Tensions Rise Ahead of 2027 Elections

Methu’s latest comments come at a time when politicians are positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with disagreements emerging over political alliances, leadership and the financing of opposition activities.

The debate over Uhuru’s alleged role in opposition politics has also featured in public exchanges involving other political leaders.

In June 2026, Jubilee Party Executive Director Dann Mwangi dismissed claims that Uhuru was financing the Linda Mwananchi movement. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has also denied that the former President funds the movement, saying its activities rely on contributions from supporters and leaders.

Methu’s statement is therefore likely to draw further attention to the question of how opposition political activities are financed and the evidence behind claims involving the former President.

As the 2027 elections approach, such exchanges are expected to remain part of the wider political debate, with leaders defending their alliances and challenging allegations made against them.
