Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday, October 20, Ruto declared that the next election should be determined by leaders’ performance, vision and development plans.

“Next year, we will return to the ballot box. The political transition we began in 2022 must not be reversed,” Ruto said, according to People Daily.

Ruto outlines his message ahead of 2027

Ruto’s remarks come as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential race, with questions about governance, economic performance and the country’s future direction expected to shape the national debate.

By urging Kenyans to assess leaders based on their records, vision and development plans, the President presented the coming election as a decision about whether the political direction established in 2022 should continue.

His statement also reinforced his administration’s argument that development priorities and government performance should be central considerations when voters return to the ballot.

However, the President’s remarks did not amount to an announcement of a new election strategy or a specific measure designed to secure victory in 2027.

Mashujaa Day address puts political continuity in focus

This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations were held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, bringing the national event to Uasin Gishu County.

The annual celebration honours Kenyans whose sacrifices and contributions have shaped the country’s history, including those who fought for independence and those who continue to serve their communities and the nation.

Ruto used the occasion to address the political transition ahead of the next election, making clear that he does not want the direction established after the 2022 polls to be reversed.

His comments place the continuation of his political agenda among the issues likely to feature prominently in the run-up to the 2027 vote.
